It seemingly came out of nowhere 27 years ago this week when the most famous athlete in the world, Michael Jordan, after having quit basketball the previous fall, announced his intention to try to become a big league ballplayer. It would prove a difficult road for Jordan, who still did far better than anyone could have predicted.
